Design Star 6: My Version of Kellie’s Nook

Bonus Room from HGTV’s Design Star

Vacationing last week in the mountains with no TV and limited internet was relaxing, but . . . I missed the premiere of HGTV’s Design Star! Thanks to my DVR, I am now caught up and ready to comment on the show. I agree that the bonus room was my favorite design and executed by my favorite team. Kellie was smart to make use of the awkward space under the stairs and I like her colorful solution.

However, I have another idea. What about a library nook with bookshelves and a low day bed with speakers? It would be the perfect hiding place for curling up with a book or a design magazine.

Imagine fitting narrow shelving ( or front facing book ledges) along the back wall of the stair nook. Consider a boxed-in mattress or giant floor cushion that covers the entire floor space. Toss in some colorful pillows, mount some wall lamps and the vision is complete!

What would YOU do if you were Kellie? How would you transform negative space into a positive addition to the room?

{It’s almost time for another episode of Design Star (Mondays 9/8c) so I’ll be tuning in to see what happens in week 2. .. Still not sure what I think of all the contestants, but I’m glad to see David Bromstad back as a mentor.}
