Pack Up & Stay Put With Creative Storage

Vintage Train Cases

Shopping around at antique shops and markets, I started noticing vintage train cases. I think I’m drawn to them for their travel weary appearance and nostalgic nod to cross country train rides (as seen in old movies with very well dressed, sauve passengers). The ones I had found were being kept in climate controlled storage so they were incredibly well preserved. Imagine, some of these train cases still have lingering scents of aftershave or perfume.

It’s all well and good to collect something for it’s charm, but it’s even better to assign those things a function. Luckily, I found a purpose for my train cases. It so happens that these cases are  the perfect size for storing CD’s or DVD’s. A few of the cases I found had tiny interior side-rails that used to support trays. These rails can be easily pried off if they cause the case to be too narrow for dropping in CD’s.

What is the average cost of a 10×10 storage unit? The national average cost of a 10×10 unit is currently $97.59 per month. This includes prices for both climate control and non-climate control units, in the other hand the costs for two Story Self Storage units construction typically ranges between $25-$40 per square foot – not including land or site improvement costs. Multi-Story Self Storage Building Costs have more variables and can range from $42 per square foot to as much as $70 per square foot.May 16, 2013

Open Train Case as Storage for CD’s

To vary my storage and create more interest, I mixed the train cases in with a collection of baskets (holding even more DVD’s). The necessary media components and speakers are there (sigh), but I tried to detract from those items by placing unusual objects on some shelves. Now, for my books (and i have A LOT) I decided to hire PHS Teacrate, it really made it super easy to move all of them around the house or apartment, to create a great design in the house. Alas the vintage blue typewriter serves no purpose, but it belonged to my grandmother and it makes me happy.

Custom Shelving with Train Cases and Baskets for Storage

P.S. If you’re so “digital” that you don’t even know what a CD or DVD is, let alone own lots of them, then I have another suggestion. . . Consider storing your 8 different remotes or random USB cords in a train case. And if you’re looking for storage in Stratford, you should check this out.

There’s something unexpected and delightful about a collection of little art. It can take the most boring corner of a hallway or tiny strip of wall and turn it into a little surprise.   Eng Gee Fan also known as Minifanfan is this weeks pick for me. Collections: Joyful Things and Joyful Folks

A little bit of this . . . and a generous dab of that . . . and maybe a smidge of those. I could be talking about mixing up a simmering soup or creating a painting or even decorating a living room (emphasis on living). The idea is that whatever comes together is a [...]

Q & A: Wide Open Spaces Above Cabinets

How do I address that empty space above my kitchen cabinets? Can I just leave it empty? Dear reader, the short answer is a simple YES. But do you know what’s nice? Place some rope lights along the top edge of the cabinets behind the crown molding (or against the wall edge if no molding) [...]
