The sweet little town where I grew up outside of Chicago has always been a showplace for nifty architecture, but I was so impressed with the beauty of the gardens during a recent trip. This gorgeous garden gate made me gasp and slam on the brakes.

The deep eggplant color looks perfectly at home in the garden, making the green hues around it sing. The fuzzy shrub in the background is Cotinus coggygria, commonly known as Purple Smoke Bush, whose leaves likely provided the inspiration for the gate’s color.

Peek inside – the granite planter framed by the whimsical gate is deliciously primitive. Again the use of purple leaved plants strengthen the gate color selection. Consider making your own luscious planter using hypertufa. It’s definitely on my list of things to do…
