Chip in!

So Christmas is over for 2010 and New Year’s Eve is beckoning. Before all the parties kick in, make a resolution to chip in. If you had a fresh tree this year, please consider recycling your Christmas tree and turning it into a resource.

Bonus! Trees collected in many cities are recycled into mulch, which is usually made available free residents.

Adding mulch to your planting beds is one of the very best things you can do for your plants. However, freshly made mulch will remove nitrogen from your soil as it decomposes, which is detrimental to your plants’ health. Advice from The Organic Gardener blog

  • Keep damp decaying mulch away from direct contact with plants. It could cause rot.
  • Some organic matter breaks down to cause an acidic reaction in the soil; e.g. pine needles, some wood chip mulches. Don’t use around lime loving plants.
  • Many organic mulches have relatively high carbon content. This means that soil micro-organisms will take nitrogen from the soil to balance their ration. This causes temporary soil nitrogen depletion:
  1. The solution is to leave organic mulch on the surface where it is intended to be.
  2. Alternatively add nitrogen to the mulch. Comfrey leaves, comfrey tea, worm compost tea, garden compost tea, diluted urine, will all help to redress the balance. Also fish meal, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, plus the 3 fertilizer teas, might be sprayed over any plants likely to be effected.

Shopping Trip for Holiday Gardens!

Shopping Trip for Holiday Gardens!

I buzzed into The Great Outdoors on South Congress in Austin last week to swoop up some plants for winter pots out back (fav find was artichokes – so gorgeous with their outsized silvery blue leaves) and found myself in the midst of some serious Christmas cheer. Red wigglers are great to use in no-till [...]

Fun Family Excursion will Beautify Your Life!

There is no better time to plant in Central Texas than now! Plants will have a long establishment time before getting socked with the searing summer heat. We can work happily in the garden without sweating ourselves to dried husks. And often times, nurseries will reduce the pricing on some stock to move it before [...]

Series: Lawn Options/Synthetic Grass

Children in white linen frolicking with croquet mallets. Rolling meadows of close cropped fescues and sedges. Bucolic pastures dotted with sheep. I think these images are the inspiration for our approach to our yards – long stretches of green to give us the feeling we are To the Manor Born. Well, snap out of it! [...]

Bursting to get out!

Bursting to get out!

As we transition from Crazy Hot Summer to Tolerably Warm Fall here in Austin, we tend to burst outside as if surfacing from a deep dive. We gulp in the fresh air and revel in the teeniest cool breeze. It begs the question – how do we bring that gorgeousness inside when we can’t be [...]

Oh so campy!

Oh so campy!

Camping or glamping? My huz and I have been discussing low impact ways to build a vacation home on our sweet little lakeside plot in Maine. We’d like to pitch a tent to get used to the land and its quirks while we do our planning but, between you and me, I do not relish [...]
