Design Star Inspiration from Emily

Did you watch this season of Design Star? If so, you’ll already know that adorable and quirky Emily Henderson won her own show. Secrets from a Stylist premieres this Sunday on HGTV and we are very curious to watch what happens.
Emily’s style is considered bohemian chic because of the way she layers interesting random objects and bright patterns. There’s a certain effortless, world traveled, casual aspect to Emily’s style. She loves gold or brass accents, lovely found objects, and a variety of textures in furniture and fabrics. You can see Emily’s skill as a stylist for photo shoots in the way she designs vignettes, or those little collected moments in a space. Borrow a few tips from a stylist:
Style shelves with collected items that have simple beauty or special meaning for you. Choose items that will balance through shape and color, but still have an asymmetrical composition in the space. In this example, white is the unifying color but shots of rich blue and pale green repeat throughout the grouping for contrast.
A similar color palette of white with navy blue and gold is used again in this display. Be loose in your arrangements to capture the freedom of this collection. The flea market pictures lean on the wall, the gold chain carelessly drapes across the credenza, and there is play in the scale of the objects. Tiny pictures float over larger objects. If you look at the shape of the entire grouping, it’s basically a triangle which is always a solid shape in design.

This eclectic living room is a good example a modern, unpredictable combination of items. The focal point is obviously the vintage flag over the rich blue sofa. The structure of the cross on the flag is offset by the organic cow hide rug. Most of the other textures are warm and earthy from the clean lined furniture to the leather ottoman to the wicker side table. With dash of femininity, a floral pillow and curvy vintage lamp keep this room from being too masculine.
